About the University of Ghana
The University of Ghana is a public university located in Accra, Ghana. It is the premier, oldest, and largest of the thirteen public universities in Ghana.
The university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast in the British colony of the Gold Coast.
It was originally an affiliated college of the University of London, which supervised its academic programs and awarded degrees.
After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the college was renamed the University College of Ghana. It changed its name again to the University of Ghana in 1961, when it gained full university status.
The University of Ghana is situated on the west side of the Accra Legon Hills and northeast of the centre of Accra. It has over 60,000 registered students.
The original emphasis on establishing the University of Ghana was on the liberal arts, social sciences, law, basic science, agriculture, and medicine. However, as part of a national educational reform program, the university’s curriculum was expanded to provide more technology-based and vocational courses as well as postgraduate training.
The University of Ghana, which is mainly based in Legon, about 12 kilometers northeast of the center of Accra, has its medical school in the town of Korle-Bu, with a teaching hospital and a secondary/external campus in the city of Accra.
It also has a graduate school of nuclear and allied Sciences at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, making it one of the few universities in Africa offering programs in nuclear physics and nuclear engineering.
In 1961 the Government of Ghana under Kwame Nkrumah passed the University of Ghana Act, 1961 (Act 79) to replace the then University College of Ghana. Through that act, the university attained sovereign university status and mandate to award its own degrees.
The university is run on a collegiate system and is divided into four colleges: the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Humanities.
Within the colleges are research institutions and centers that include the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIR), the Centre for Tropical, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the Regional Institute for Population Studies.
With partnership agreements in place with universities in North America and Europe, as well as Africa, the university offers several programmes for student and staff exchange, and collaborative research.
It is also a member of numerous associations, including the Association of African Universities, the Norwegian Universities’ Committee for Development Research and Education, the Council for International Educational Exchange based in New York, the International Student Exchange Programmes, and the Commonwealth Universities Student Exchange Consortium. It is also a member of the League of World Universities.
