Suspected Murderers of Miss Uwa Omozua Arrested

It’s been over 2 months since the death of  UNIBEN student, Miss Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 level student who was gruesomely raped and murdered inside a Redeem Christian Church of God in Benin City, Edo State on May 30, 2020. The murder sent shockwaves throughout the entire country as people wondered why a young lady, who went to read inside church premises, will be murdered in such fashion. It necessitated nationwide protests and the trending of the hashtag, Justice for Uwa on all social media platforms as several individuals condemn gender-based violence on women and demanded that Miss Uwa murderers be apprehended. At long last, a breakthrough has been made on the murder case investigations.

Reactions From the Institution Involved Following the Murder

The SUG President of the University of Benin, Comr. Egwu Benjamin had continued to assure UNIBEN students of the cooperation of the Nigerian police in arresting the suspects connected to her murder. He also went further to condemn the brutal murder of the victim and went ahead to declare that the police must be held accountable in solving the case. Justice for Uwa became a common topic for all UNIBEN students and indeed all students across the country including the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS).

On June 2, 2020, the news was circulated on the arrest of an alleged suspect concerning the case which was later denied by the family of the victim. The victim’s sister further declared her pain at the nonchalant attitude of the police, in finding the right suspects to her sister’s murder. This prompted UNIBEN students and NANS to amplify their protests as a way of forcing the police to make haste with their investigations and find justice for the victim’s family.

Suspects Apprehended at Last

After weeks of proper investigation, the police announced on the late hours of August 27th, 2020 that they have arrested 6 different suspects that are directly involved in the murder and rape of Miss Uwa. The suspects include Mary Adeh, Tina Samuel, Collins Ijebolehn, Akator Valentine, Nelson Ogbebor, and Osahboyhen Nosakhare who was alleged to have bought her phone. One other suspect identified as Lucky Samuel is still at large as at the time of the press release.

How the Crime was Perpetrated

The police alleged that Osahboyhen Nosakhare was traced through the phone of Late Miss Uwa and he confessed that the phone was sold to him by Mr. Collins Ijebolehn for N17,000.00. On his own part, Mr. Colliins Ijebolehn confessed to being the mastermind behind the entire crime, after he was paid the sum of 1 million Naira by his landlady Miss Tina Samuel to kill Late Miss Uwa Omozua for money rituals. He also alleged that he perpetrated the crime with 4 other individuals including Mr. Nelson Ogbebor who incapacitated the victim by hitting her with a wooden plank while they took turns to rape her. Mr. Collins also confessed to have been the one that hit the Late Miss Uwa with a fire extinguisher when she tried to struggle with her attackers. He concluded by telling the police that he wiped the Late Miss Uwa’s blood with a white handkerchief and handed the same over to Miss Mary Adeh. Miss Tina Samuel on her part, was arrested on the grounds of obstruction of justice after she was alleged to have prevented the police from arresting her 21 years old son Lucky, who was one of the suspects.

Further Investigations

The Edo State Commissioner of police, Justine Babatunde Kukumoh who paraded the suspects praised the diligence of the police in making breakthroughs in the investigation. He promised to apprehend the remaining suspects connected with the crime and bring respite to the Omozua family. He also promised that the murderers of the Late Miss Uwa Omozua will soon be charged to court.
