About American University
The American University of Nigeria (AUN) is a private university in Yola the capital of Adamawa, Nigeria founded by former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, after he approached the American University in Washington DC for advice on establishing an American-inspired university in Nigeria.
It was in 2007 that the institution gained its current name, and the first class of students graduated in 2009. It offers an American-style liberal arts higher education at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels.
There are five main faculties at the university: arts and sciences, business and entrepreneurship, engineering, information technology and computing, and law. In addition, the graduate school offers flexible programmes that allow busy professionals to gain advanced degrees in their specialized fields.
Accredited by the National Universities Commission, the aim and mission is to provide quality education to Nigeria and Africa’s future leaders in order to equip them with the skills needed to solve development issues on the continent and give them the knowledge needed to create solutions that will benefit their community, their country and ultimately the world.
AUN was originally called ABTI and is currently a member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities, and the Global Liberal Arts Alliance.
Facilities at the institution include convenient hostel accommodation for students, academic blocks and offices, science and IT laboratories, cafeterias, relaxation centers, a University club, an ICT center, and a modern hotel. The University recently opened an Agricultural Entrepreneurship School on a local farmstead near the campus.

American University Of Nigeria Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements For Undergraduates
- Students/Aspirants must possess a minimum Jamb score of 160 or JAMB’s yearly official cutoff score to be considered for admission at AUN.
- Students/Aspirants must have obtained at least five (5) credits, in his/her O-level result including English Language and Mathematics, on no more than two SSCE sittings, or an equivalent from a country that requires other types of exit exams or standardized tests. Exceptions, if any, are made on a case-by-case basis.
- Students/Aspirants must have obtained at least five (5) credits, in his/her O-level result including English Language and Mathematics, on no more than two SSCE sittings, or an equivalent from a country that requires other types of exit exams or standardized tests. - Students aspiring for Engineering and Technology disciplines must have obtained at least a credit level in the Senior Secondary School final year examination or GCE ‘O’ Level in five subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Physics, and Chemistry.
- Also, Engineering and Technology disciplines Aspirants/candidates are also required to have obtained at least a pass in UTME, and it is advised for each candidate to have an additional credit level in Mathematics and Technical Drawing. Candidates with these additional credit levels have an added advantage.
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honors) program aspirants must in addition possess at least a credit in Literature-in-English.
These AUN Undergraduates requirements are generally required for both UTME, Direct Entry/Transfer, and International Students, and aside from this there are other specified required documents or qualifications for each of these applicants below.
AUN Admission Requirements for O’ level candidates;
In addition to the general requirement mentioned above O’ level candidates are required to have done or possess the following below.
1) Completed Application form
2) SSCE, any or combination of (WAEC/NECO/GCE/IGCSE/NABTEB)
3) Transcripts from high school (SS1-3)
4) Letter of Recommendation (from your high school principal)
5) JAMB result (A minimum score of 160)
6) ID card (International passport/Drivers’ license/National ID card).
7) A personal Essay on why you are choosing AUN and what your future ambitions are.
8) AUN Admission Requirements for Direct Entry/Transfer Candidates.
Addition to the general requirements Direct Entry/Transfer Candidates must have completed or have the following below;
1) Completed Application form
2) Diploma result (NCE/OND/HND) or ‘A’ Level
3) Official Transcripts
4) SSCE, any or combination of (WAEC/NECO/GCE/IGCSE/NABTEB)
5) Direct entry JAMB or IJMB
6) Recommendation letter
7) AUN Admission Requirements for International Students.
8) Required Application Documents
9) End of High/Secondary School External Examination Grades; IGCSE, SSCE, or the equivalent.
10) Copies of the applicant’s High/Secondary School transcripts for the last three years. Transfer applicants need to submit undergraduate transcripts and course descriptions.
11) A Letter of Recommendation/Attestation from the high/secondary school attended
12) A Personal Statement (Essay) about why the applicant chose AUN and what his/her future ambitions are.
13) A photocopy of ID card, Valid Passport & appropriate Visa for International students (picture page)
14) Four personal Passport Photographs.
Travel & Residency Requirements;
Prospective enrollees MUST fulfill the following requirements before embarking on any study travel to American University of Nigeria in Yola;
1) Possess a valid national passport of their home countries
2) Secure valid travel visas that transcend the duration of their study period in Nigeria
3) On arrival at AUN, both travel documents must be presented and surrendered to the Office of the VP Campus Life & Dean, Student Affair at AUN, or his designated representative
4) Potential enrollees with passports and visas that have less than six months to expire must present evidence that such documents can be renewed automatically without interrupting their study period
5) Such evidence must include but not be limited to written commitments from the embassies of their home countries in Nigeria
6) Prospective students are encouraged to reside on campus as adequate hostel accommodation is available and will be allocated on completion of housing fee payment
