About the University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham (informally Birmingham University) is a public research university in Birmingham, England. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen’s College, Birmingham (founded in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery), and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason), making it the first English civic or ‘red brick’ university to receive its own royal charter and the first English unitary university.

It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities, Universitas 21.

The student population includes 23,155 undergraduate and 12,605 postgraduate students in 2019–20, which is the 7th largest in the UK (out of 169). The annual income of the university for 2021–22 was £869.8 million of which £215.0 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £1.02 billion.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, the University of Birmingham ranked 13th out of 129 institutions on grade point average, up from equal 31st in the previous REF in 2014.

Birmingham has been challenging and developing great minds for more than a century. Characterized by a tradition of innovation, research at the University has broken new ground, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge, and made an impact on people’s lives.

A founding member of the Russell Group and Universites 21, the University of Birmingham is a prestigious, world-leading educational institution, which provides an exceptionally high level of teaching.

The University of Birmingham courses will set you up for a rich and fulfilling career and are renowned for producing highly employable and successful graduates.

The University has also invested £5m in its graduate careers services and successful alumni are offered mentoring and bursaries to support work experience and internships in the UK and overseas. International students are offered a variety of specially tailored events, including coaching and skills workshops on topics such as networking skills, job-seeking strategies, and job-seeking beyond the UK.

The University currently has over 34,000 students enrolled, of which around 10,000 are international, from nearly 150 countries. Birmingham’s central location in the UK means it is easy to navigate, and Birmingham International Airport services many locations around the world.

In addition to the UK campus, which was founded over 100 years ago, the University of Birmingham launched its Dubai campus in 2018, becoming the first global top 100 and Russell Group University to establish a campus in Dubai.

The campus offers the opportunity to gain a world-class British university education in one of the world’s most dynamic and exciting cities.
